2002 Draft Preview

Mock Draft - Round 2

by Richard Harris

April 19, 2002

The following is BTG’s two-round mock draft.  Also included is the third-round projections for Tampa Bay and Miami because neither team currently has a pick in the first two rounds.  With each projected pick, I have included some notes to supplement/update my AFC and NFC Team Needs reports, which were written last month.

SECOND ROUND

PICK (OVR)

TEAM

PRIMARY NEEDS

SECONDARY NEEDS

PROJECTED SELECTION

1(33)

Houston

WR, TE, DE, ILB, OLB, and S

QB, RB, C, G, NT, and P

Javon Walker (WR), Florida State

Notes:  They may jump on Gurode if he’s available, and DE Charles Grant or DT Eddie Freeman could also be considered.  However, a big receiver like Walker will be hard to pass on.

2(34)

Carolina

QB, WR, OLB, and CB

RB, FB, TE, and OT

Mike Rumph (CB), Miami, Fla

Notes:  The team is almost forced to go for a corner.

3(35)

Detroit

QB, TE, and OLB

RB, OT, DE, and MLB

DeShaun Foster (RB), UCLA

Notes:  If Ramsey is gone, they will either go for need at OLB or value at RB.

4(36)

Buffalo

QB and S

C, G, DE, and OLB

Lamont Thompson (S), Washington State

Notes:  This pick will likely come down to Thompson, fellow safety Jon McGraw, and DE Charles Grant.

5(37)

Dallas

QB, TE, and DE

RB, WR, C, DT, MLB, and CB

Andre Davis (WR), Virginia Tech

Notes:  The Cowboys will also consider Grant, but they will likely look for offense with this pick.

6(38)

Minnesota

WR, OLB, CB, and S

MLB, P, and K

Reche Caldwell (WR), Florida

Notes:  The Vikings will consider McGraw and LB Saleem Rasheed, but they need a partner for Randy Moss.

7(39)

San Diego

G, WR, DT, and CB

RB, FB, TE, C, and DE

Andre Gurode (G), Colorado

Notes:  How bad is the San Diego O-line?  Bad enough to take back-to-back linemen.

8(40)

Jacksonville

C/G, DE, and OLB

QB, RB, FB, WR, OT, MLB, CB, and K

Saleem Rasheed (LB), Alabama

Notes:  They badly need linebackers, but RB Clinton Portis may be tempting.

9(41)

Cincinnati

TE and CB

G, OT, DE, DT, S, and K

Sheldon Brown (CB), South Carolina

Notes:  If they take a QB with their first pick, they will be looking for corner here.

10(42)

Indianapolis

G, DT, and DE

QB, RB, FB, TE, WR, MLB, and S

Charles Grant (DE), Georgia

Notes:  The Colts will be very pleased if Grant falls this far.

11(43)

Kansas City

G and OLB

QB, FB, WR, C, OT, CB, and S

Terrence Metcalf (G), Mississippi

Notes:  If the Chiefs land Bears LB Warrick Holdman, picking a guard is very likely at this spot.

12(44)

New Orleans

QB, RB, C, OT, DE, and CB

Clinton Portis (RB), Miami, Fla

Notes:  Insurance behind Deuce McAllister.

13(45)

Tennessee

C, G, DT,  and OLB

QB, RB, OT, CB, and S

LeCharles Bentley (C), Ohio State

Notes:  The Titans will have a tough choice between Bentley and DTs Freeman and Tripplett.

14(46)

NY Giants

G, TE, and S

FB, WR, C, DT, DE, MLB, OLB, and K

Kendell Simmons (G), Auburn

Notes:  The Giants continue to replenish their o-line.

15(47)

Cleveland

G

FB, C, OT, DT, OLB, and S

Eric Heitman (G), Stanford

Notes:  A guard would fill their last big void, but they could go with a DT.

16(48)

San Diego from Atlanta

WR, DT, and CB

RB, FB, TE, C, G, and DE

Eddie Freeman (DT), UAB

Notes:  They could take a CB, but there are very few good defensive tackles left.

17(49)

Arizona

DE and OLB

QB, RB, FB, WR, C, DT, CB, and S

Bryan Thomas (DE), UAB

Notes:  Thomas is an excellent pass rusher, and the Cards will be very happy to get him at this spot.

18(50)

Houston (Supplemental Selection)

TE, DE, ILB, OLB, and S

QB, RB, C, G, WR, NT, and P

Jon McGraw (S), Kansas State

Notes:  McGraw is a heady player, who will have a short learning curve.

19(51)

Denver

 OT

WR, FB, G, DT, MLB, and OLB

Marc Colombo (OT), Boston College

Notes:  Assuming the Broncos do not take an OT with their first pick, they will be elated if they can grab Colombo at this spot.

20(52)

Washington

QB, WR, and DE/DT

RB, TE, C/G, MLB, and S

Alex Brown (DE), Florida

Notes:  The Redskins will have to choose between a wide receiver and a DE to back up the aging Bruce Smith and Marco Coleman.

21(53)

Oakland from Tampa Bay

DT and S

QB, WR, TE, MLB, and OLB

Larry Tripplett (DT), Washington

Notes:  The Raiders finally get their defensive tackle.

22(54)

Seattle

DE

RB, WR, OT, DT, OLB, and S

Ryan Denney (DE), BYU

Notes:  The Seahawks will be very pleased to get Shockey and Denney with their first two picks.

23(55)

Oakland

S

QB, WR, TE, DT, MLB, and OLB

Tim Carter (WR), Auburn

Notes:  The Raiders need a safety more, but they really like Carter’s blazing speed.

24(56)

Baltimore

QB, WR, OT, DT, DE, CB, and S

RB, FB, G, TE, ILB, and P

Andre Goodman (CB), South Carolina

Notes:  There should be a handful of good corners at this spot, and the Ravens could use two.

25(57)

NY Jets

G, CB, and S

QB, FB, WR, OT, TE, DT, DE, and MLB

Tank Williams (S), Stanford

Notes:  The Jets find Victor Green’s replacement.

26(58)

Philadelphia

MLB

WR, C, DT, DE, CB and S

Levar Fisher (LB), North Carolina State

Notes:  The Eagles grab a potential replacement for Jeremiah Trotter.

27(59)

Philadelphia from Miami

WR, C, DT, DE, CB and S

Joseph Jefferson (CB), Western Kentucky

Notes:  Troy Vincent and Bobby Taylor are getting older.

28(60)

Green Bay

DT

QB, RB, FB, G, MLB, and S

Lamar Gordon (RB), North Dakota State

Notes:  With the top DTs gone, the Packers grab a backup RB to replace Dorsey Levens.

29(61)

San Francisco

OT, TE, DT, OLB, CB, S, and K

Derek Ross (CB), Ohio State

Notes:  The 49ers grab a No. 3 CB to match up with the Rams receivers.

30(62)

Pittsburgh

C/G, OT, WR, TE, DE, CB, and S

Cliff Russell (WR), Utah

Notes:  Russell would add needed speed to the receiving corps.  The versatile Fred Weary (G/C) would be another option.

31(63)

Chicago

OT and CB

QB, RB, DT, DE, MLB, OLB, and S

Roosevelt Williams (CB), Tuskegee

Notes:  Offensive tackle is the bigger need, but the remaining talent will dictate that the Bears take a CB.

32(64)

St. Louis

QB, RB, FB, WR, TE, MLB, OLB, CB, and S

Raonall Smith (LB), Washington State

Notes:  The Rams will grab speedy wideouts Carter or Russell if one is available.  Otherwise, they’ll grab a linebacker or cornerback.

33(65)

New England

DT and CB

QB, FB, WR, DE, OLB, and S

Keyuo Craver (CB), Nebraska

Notes:  With no quality tackles in sight, the Pats select a promising corner.

THIRD ROUND

PICK (OVR)

TEAM

PRIMARY NEEDS

SECONDARY NEEDS

PROJECTED SELECTION

21(86)

Tampa Bay

WR

OT, G/C, DE, DT, MLB, CB, and S

Kelly Campbell (WR), Georgia Tech

Notes:  The Bucs have spent most of the offseason reworking their offense.  Gone are players such as RB Warrick Dunn, G Randall McDaniel, WR Jacquez Green, and TE Dave Moore.  The newcomers include RB Michael Pittman, G Kerry Jenkins, WR Joe Jurevicius, TE Ken Dilger, and QB Rob Johnson.  Despite the changes, the club’s most pressing need (WR) is on the offensive side of the ball.  The Bucs will also be looking for a MLB to challenge Nate Webster.

25(90)

Miami

OT, TE, and DE

QB, WR, G, MLB, OLB, and S

Kenyon Coleman (DE), UCLA

Notes:  The Dolphins solved a long-standing problem by trading for RB Ricky Williams, but they have three major areas of concern and no picks in the first two rounds.  The left tackle spot became a trouble spot when Richmond Webb was cut last year, and TE Jed Weaver offers little value as a receiver.  In addition, the team lost DEs Kenny Mixon and Lorenzo Bromell to the Vikings.  The team may also be in the market for guard because starter Mark Dixon has been slow to recover from a leg injury, and depth is sorely needed at linebacker.  At this spot, players such as Coleman, OT Langston Walker, and TE Terry Jones should be available.
